AUGUST 20th, 2008
Last night in our KARATE class we worked some interesting combos to defend the clinch... We also worked various counters to different kick and threw in some takedowns off the defenses!! We study the techniques from kata and attempt them in some live drilling sessions... This is a real eye opener for people who have never attempted to utilise these techniques on a resistant opponent. But it also makes for some fun and interesting training sessions!
The MMA class consisted of mainly S Rolling. Sounds easy but try doing this for a good half hour straight and you will see some results!
Tonight is another MMA class so be sure to come out and train! If you are going to Ottawa this weekend, try to make it out as we are just going over last minute details!
oohh... SUMMER BBQ at the dojo Saturday August 30th!!! Be there! and someone remind me to mention this in class!! LOL
See you soon!

This thurday, there will be no MMA class because we will be leaving for Ottawa early Friday morning. Everyone going to Ottawa, please contatct me one way or another just to touch base with the plans for the trip. There is also some elements of etiquette that I will be going over before we leave!!

Hello Everyone!
Classes this week have been awesome!! Everyday this week we worked our stand up game and really put in some high numbers for kicks and combos. We are currently working on some club drills to put into effect and after only a week we can really see a difference already!!
As always our Karate classes are unique!! After working our traditional drills, the MMA guys join us for the last half hour and we put our traditional techniques into practice during live training. I can assure you that no other Karate Club trains this way!
Next weekend a group of us will be leaving for Ottawa to attend a huge seminar at OAMA. There will be 6 Renzo Gracie Black Belt in attendance at this seminar and it will be quite the experience!! Make sure to check out the pics because we will take many!!
I always forget to mention this in class but hopefully you all read these posts… The end of summer BBQ will be on Saturday August 30th. This will be a lot of fun for everyone and we hope you can make it out!!

WELL WHAT A WEEKEND!!! We had a blast with the boys from OAMA at the NAGA event BATTLE AT THE BEACH in Wildwood New Jersey!!! A huge Thanks goes out to Pat, Hammer and all the boys for setting everything up and making us feel like a part of the team!! Once again at this event, OAMA showed why their BJJ is second to none!!
Our boys, Chris and John did an awesome job representing our club and their efforts was a true representation of our entire team's hard work!! We should have some video uploaded to you tube by the end of the night.... so just do a search for SUDBURY MMA and check them out... We will post direct links ASAP to make it easy!! NO CLASSES MONDAY AUGUST 4TH (LONG WEEKEND)
Unfortunately, this will be the only update this week as we have a busy weekend planned!! But there is alot news to cover...
First off, Congratulations to all the fighters who recently competed at FREEDOM FIGHT this past weekend! The event was a huge success and saw many great fights!! Pete Rodley assembled an awesome show!!
Classes this week have been more of the same....Simply an intense workout!! We have several guys who want to compete in different types of fights, MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ etc... and you can see by their training that they take it very seriously.... Our Karate program is full of young guys right now and we have been working our trechniques and a more dynamic form... Our Ippons, and self defense resemble more like some of our counter drills in MMA except without the padding!! This is not your typical Karate!!
This weekend two of our boys will be heading to Ottawa to join the OAMA crew in competing at the Battle at the Beach in New Jersey. This is a huge NAGA BJJ event that draws over a thousand competitors every year!! Make sure to wish our boys luck when you see them....They are competing not only for themselves but for the school too!!!
Also, as many of you know, there is an awesome senimar opportunity available in Ottawa!!! This is a chance for you to train with 4 Renzo Gracie Black Belts!!! Igor Gracie, Gregor Gracie, Holls Jr. Gracie and of course the man Pat Cooligan will all be at the seminar August 23-24th... This is a closed seminar available to only Team Renzo Gracie members! Our man Steve Joncas from Sudbury BJJ has opened up these opportunities for us in Northern Ontario so the least we can do is GO!!!! If you are interested in this seminar, you need to contact OAMA and register right away before the seminar fills up!!! Get ur done!!! LOL
One more thing.... We want to organise a club BBQ before the end of the summer!! Just a chance for all the members to hang out and get to know eachother oustide a setting where someone is trying to choke you or punch you in the face!!! A date will be set up soon so we can do more planning!!!
Enjoy the rest of the week's classes, the long weekend and we will see everyone on Tuesday night!!
Other than that we will see everyone when we get back!!!
Reminders:
August 2nd - NAGA New Jersey
August 4th - No Classes - Enjoy the long weekend

JULY 24th, 2008
Wednesday night, we had a guest from North Bay come in and train with us. Tim Chessel, who has recently fought with King of the Cage, came to get some extra training time with us. Tim and his wife Jodi have an excellent attitude and Tim’s work ethic was really evident in his training! Both are welcome back anytime and I am sure we will be seeing more of Tim in the future. Jodi has taken some video and photos so look for some new additions to the KEN BU KAN / SUDBURY MMA Facebook page as she has promised to add some “stuff” !!
Thursday night training consisted of repping out techniques in both the Karate and the MMA class! This may not be the most exciting aspect of training but it is mandatory to achieving the muscle memory required to make these techniques second nature.
The NAGA event Battle at the Beach is fast approaching. This takes place next weekend so make sure to push our boys who will be going down to compete at this tournament!! They not only get some individual experience but bring back that experience home too so that we can all benefit from it!! These are the events that will take our skill set to the next level!!
Enjoy the weekend to rest up!! And we wish our training partners that are fighting in Quebec at the Freedom Fight Event all the best!!! Good Luck Boys!!!
Lastly if you want to check out a few pictures that were taken during one of our classes by Jodi... Just follow this link PICTURES
See everyone next week!
JULY 22nd 2008
Well.... Every week, I say to myself... Training simply cannot stay this intense!! Then every night I pretty well crawl out of here!!! Monday and Tuesday nights have been the same this week! By the end of the night, I rush outside just to get air, then go fall on the couch until bedtime! LOL
Tonight, Dean taught the Karate class and his classes are always detail oriented!! People leave his class mentally drained!! Then if you stuck around for the MMA class, we made sure you left physically drained !! A complete training session!
Wednesday night we will be having a guest coming in to train with us from out of town so be sure to try and make it out as he is looking for a good workout!! I know a few of our guys are on holidays but the attendance here has been awesome!! I look forward to tomorrow night's training!!
See you in class!
JULY 21st, 2008
Considering all the new people interested in joining our club lately, we have added a Sign-up Special as an incentive for the student's commitment! For 250.00$ you will receive three months of lessons in either program, a uniform (karate or grappling), a school t-shirt (while quantities last) and a school crest. This is over 100$ in savings! So if you are thinking of joining or renewing your membership now is the time!! Bring in a friend and we will credit your membership half of the time that they initially sign up for!! For example, if they sign up for three months, you will have a month and a half added to your membership just for referring them!! This is simply our way of thanking you for supporting the club!!
Also... If you did not know, John is available for one on one sessions too. You will have the opportunity to learn one on one for an hour and study any material that you are interested in. These privates are available for both Karate and Grappling. If you want, you can also split the private with a friend and both can attend. If interested in either of these speak with John.
Tonight, classes resume with our MMA class first! After an exciting weekend of MMA, I am sure tonight's class will be packed....and nobody will be leaving early!!! LOL See everyone tonight!
JULY 18th, 2008
Well the rest of the week's classes did not dissapoint either!!! Wednesday night's class was so intense that many of the guys "wanted out" fifteen minutes early!! LOL They are lucky I was not there otherwise there would have been more pain! That's OK because I will be in all the classes next week!! Pain a cometh!! LOL
Last night was more of the same!! Sempai Charlie taught the Karate and everybody know that when he teaches it usually involves bruises! LOL
Mike taught the MMA class and that involved one hour of straight drilling / sparring!
This weekend is like MMA Christmas!! Saturday will be an exciting night that MMA fans around the world are excited for!! So enjoy the weekend, enjoy the fights!! rest up and see everyone monday night!!!
JULY 16th, 2008
WOW…What a turnout the past couple of nights for all our classes !!!
There were several of the boys out training hard monday night in our MMA class and a few new faces too!! Remember to make these new guys feel welcome because they will be your training partners and soon enough helping to push you to the next level too!!!
Our Karate class last night was no different!! There is a lot of young new blood in this class and the class is already starting to pick up it’s pace and getting tougher all the time….We have been building on our traditional exercises and working some of the traditional combinations in live training….without pads (the traditional way) ..Let me tell you… This changes things!!! You definitely want to ensure you are blocking properly!!!
All this excitement and still two more training nights to go this week !! Don't miss out!!
See you all soon!!
JULY 13th, 2008
Hello everyone and finally the weekend is over!!! There are a few Congrats to put out there but the most important is….
CONGRATULATIONS to Tim and his family. Baby Lukas was born this past weekend and he will hope to make his MMA debut in 2028 …Just Kidding Chantal!! Mom and Baby are doing great !!!!
Also…
Congratulations to our Sudbury guys who competed this past weekend in Detroit!!!
Our man Chris competed in this tournament. It was his first tournament and the experience is invaluable!! Congrats on jumping into the tournament scene!!
Steve Joncas and the boys from Sudbury BJJ did awesome!! I am not sure of the details but apparently the car was a little heavier to drive back because of all the medals they brought back! Good job boys!!!
Tonight, we start the week off with our MMA class and we will be focusing heavily on some grappling because we will have a couple of our guys that will be going down and competing at the Battle on the Beach in Wildwood, New Jersey.
This is another NAGA event and promises to be a huge tournament. It apparently has a huge turnout and has been running for the past nine years!! Hopefully our boys can bring home some hardware!! Make sure you work them hard for the next couple of weeks!!
Ok…. Back to training Monday night!!!
See everyone soon!
JULY 10th, 2008
This week has been a long set of tough workouts for the boys!!! Our Karate classes focused on some cool combinations and how to counter attack while our MMA class focused mainly on repping out techniques and some positional sparring. Drilling those positions suck but they will pay off in competion!!!
Speaking of competion, Chris, Steve Joncas and the boys from Sudbury BJJ leave tomorrow morning for another good NAGA tournament. We wish them the best of luck and hope to see some new hardware back in Sudbury. Those american boys love it when us northern boys turn it up!!! As soon as I get some info about the result, I will post them up!!!
See everyone next week!!! I think that after this weekof training, we need the weekend to heal up and come back strong on monday!!!

Well let me tell you this! If anyone thinks that you cannot get a good workout with MMA training, I say that you should have been in class tonight!! My hands are actually still shaking as I type this!!! They say that martial artist are a little bit crazy but in love with their Martial Art!!! When training...it is like time stands still and all stressors in life are gone!!!
A complete body sweat
You feel your heart beating in your chest and temples
Your vision is slightly blurred
Every breath feels difficult to take
One more technique and you swear you will puke
You can't wait to take your Gi top off just to feel a little cooler
The smell of your gloves
Your water bottle's temperature went from cold to warm
Your ears hurt at night (and you try to hide them from your wife)
Icing your injuries on the couch
Maybe we are crazy!! LOL.... But I would not want it any other way!!! I can't wait for the next class!!!
See you all soon!!!

Training in this weather makes us actually look froward to the winter months!! LOL or an air conditioner!! Although it was a short week due to the holiday, that did not stop the boys from coming out and getting some training time in!! Our Karate class saw some well deserved promotions this week and a huge congratulations goes out to these Karate Ka!!!
Grappling on the new mats has been awesome!! I think my BJJ game has increased by 10% strictly because of the new mats!! LOL This will be an exciting summer as we have some tournaments planned and the summer BBQ planned in Ottawa as well as some talk of our ouw summer BBQ but there will be more details on that as we solidify some plans!!
Chris will be going to Detroit to take in a NAGA tournament netx weekend with Steve Joncas and the boys from Sudbury BJJ so let's push him hard in training and wish him and the boys from our sister school all the best luck next weekend.....Bring home some hardware boys!!! Looks like the weekend will be a nice one so enjoy it and get back to training next week!!! Remember that there is no secret to improving... Just train on the same days that you eat!!

If you think it is hot an humid outside....Just come on in to a class and get a workout with us and then I can tell you that you will understand all about HOT!!! Beleive it or not .... this is perfect weather for training!!! The muscles are nice and warm and less prone to injury!! Just bring lots of water!!!
This past Wednesday, Ron taught the MMA class and continued to work on some of the techniques that we have been reviewing. Thursday, both classes, the Karate and MMA were taught by John. The Karate worked how to use elbows and upper cuts from the clich. Those scare me!! LOL Our MMA class focused on repping out fundamentals followed by some sparring...by 9:30, people were happy to get outside into the fresh air!!! Awesome workout!!
There are a few interesting events coming up for everyone...There is a NAGA tournament in Detroit, the Freedom Fight in July, another NAGA event in New Jersey at the beggining of August, and a trip to Otttawa at the end of August. So there are plenty of events that you can take part in this summer to give you some experience for your training!!
There will be no classes TUESDAY due to the holiday, so take that time to enjoy with your families then Wednesday get back to your extended family here at the club!! LOL Next week, there will be regular classes Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully we will see you then!

Well Monday night was filled with mixed emotions for the instructors and the students of our Coniston location.
On one hand, there were several promotions, many unexpected, which brought a lot of surprise and joy to some of the students and on the other hand, it was the last night of classes for the Coniston group until the fall and therefore we are sad L that we wont be seeing everyone or training together for a couple of months!
We hope everyone enjoyed the classes in Coniston and wish everyone a safe and exciting summer!!! We want to congratulate everyone on a great year and look forward to seeing everyone again in September!! That being said, everyone knows that they are more than welcome to stop by and train at our classes in Sudbury as we will be training four night a week all summer!
Tuesday night we had our last kid’s class in Sudbury as well…We enjoyed pizza and also saw some of the kids get promoted!! The kid’s class may be ending for the summer however, the exciting news is that we will be having a few more new faces in our Karate program….There are a few of the kids who will be joining us in the adult class ….I guess they are not kids but now they are young adults!!
We welcome them to the class and hope that their training will jump up a level in this class…Good Luck!!
Don’t miss the rest of the classes this week as we still have two packed nights of training!! Be there or be square!! Ok corny…. I know!! LOL
See everyone soon!!

Monday will be the last class in Coniston and Tuesday will be the last class for the kids in Sudbury. But although both these classes will be the last ones of the season, They will be very fun flled and exciting!! We will be conducting the Belt Promotions that night and also a Pizza Party for the students!! Make sure to come out and bring your camera too!!
As you all know the MMA program continues to grow!!! We have therefore added yet another class to the weekly roster! We will now have another MMA class on Tuesday nights from 8:30pm - 9:30pm. That right!!! There will now be 4 MMA classes a week!!! We can only Thank all the students for making this such a popular program!!

Ok well it seems I have finally figured out how to add "stuff" to this new model of the website, so we should be having our regular updates again!! LOL Last week I missed most of the classes due to work but every night, I speak with the instructors and we discuss the different strateigies etc... to improve the teaching and the overall progression of the students learning! Our instructors always put the students needs first! Last weeks classes were a good combination of traditional training, drilling techniques and live sparring. This week, I will be in class and after a week off....I can't wait!!!
Tonight is TESTING NIGHT IN CONISTON!!! So parents remember to bring your cameras....Testing starts at 6:30 pm SHARP!!! Tomorrow we will be TESTING THE KIDS IN SUDBURY....same time and of course parents are more than welcome to attend at all times!!

Look for an update regarding the train-a-thon later this weekend!! but really we hope to see you there (and you won't need an update! LOL
June 4th, 2008
The classes continue to grow!! We have actually had so many new students that we are temporarily not taking any other new students until our current members achieve a certain level of proficiency....Again, here at the KEN BU KAN, we are more concerned about the quality of our martial arts as opposed to the number of students we have. Aside from that, please make sure to make our new members fell welcome and help them with any questions they have about the club!!
DON'T FORGET...THE TRAIN-A-THON IS THIS SATURDAY!!!!
As the Train-A-Thon approaches, here are a couple of tips to help the guys get through the day!!
Make sure to bring a couple of extra t-shirts!! The last thing we want to be doing is moping up sweat from 9 hours of hard-core training!!
If you have a karate gi and a grappling gi bring both of them!! If you don’t have a gi….don’t be so cheap and get one…Talk to John and he can hook you up with either gi.
Invest in a rash guard!! You can buy a really nice one or a cheap one for ten bucks at Walmart!!! They are well worth it!
Bring lots of fluids!! Water and sports drinks!! It is very important to replenish your fluids! We will be training all day so also bring light fruits or protein bars to snack on during the breaks.
Bring a note pad! We plan on teaching some really cool stuff so you can write it down and put it to memory.
The bottom line is…. Come on out Saturday, bring extra clothes to train in, bring lots of fluids and fuel, and have fun!!!

Hey guys...Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!! One week from today, it will be a totally different type of day!! Saturday is our TRAIN-A-THON....and not only is this event going to be awesome for our members but hopefully we will be having some visitors from other clubs!! For example, Steve Joncas from our sister school, Sudbury BJJ is planning to attend the event and will be doing some teaching that night in the BJJ portion of the traiining session. Steve is a pioneer of BJJ in northern ontario so make sure to take advantage of his experience.
Remember, if you have any friends that are interested in taking in a class at our club, bring them out to the train-a-thon.....what a better way to find out about everything we do at the club....it will be a total of 9 hours af training time....The karate will be fom 1pm - 5pm and the MMA / BJJ will be from 6pm -11pm.... and it is all for a good cause....OUR NEW MATS!!! Sensei John taught class last night in Coniston....The class turned out to be more of a history lesson about traditional Okinawan Karate. Sensei John beleives it is very important to know about our lineage. The fact that we can easily trace our lineage back to Miyagi Chojun shows just how authentic our karate is!! Without a doubt, the Karate you are learning here in Sudbury is the same as the Karate presently being taught in Okinawa, Japan.
We are also very lucky to be learning Ryu Kyu Kobudo. Did you know that in Japan, there are schools completely dedicated to strictly weapons training. The curriculum is completely different. You can be a black belt in weaponry and never have step foot in a Karate school. Luckily, we are able to offer this training as well due to Sensei Perry Campbell. He spent some time learning Kobudo while he lived in Okinawa and was the first person to bring Okinawan Weaponary to northern Ontario. This training has been passed down through the dojo over the past decade.
Our MMA class was in full effect last night too!!! This is the fastest growing program at the club!! I personally guarattee the best complete body workout you will ever have when you sign up for this training here at the club!! Contact us anytime to try a class!!
Tonight we blend both traditional training and modern training. Thursdays are a great night to experience our complete curriculum!

Wow...I cannot beleive where the time goes!! We are already in the middle of another week and as usual, training has picked up again!! It seems that everyone is in training mode right now!!! that is awesome because it is like we can see the level of everyone's game moving up and up!!
Everyone seems pretty excited for the Train-A-Thon coming up on June 7th!! Not only is everyone guaranteed a great work out but if you are not involved in any other of the programs we offer here at the club, you should plan to attend the whole day and train with everyone from all the programs!!! If you train the entire day, it will result in a 10 hour training day!! The question is....can you handle it!! LOL or bring a friend to try out the class....What a better time to try out the school....with a 10 hour day they will be sure to meet most of us and train each discipline we offer!!!
Again, with all the new guys training please make sure to introduce yourself and I always aks the senior students to take the time and explain some of our etiquette policies to the new guys....This is extremely important as after all.....we study a martial art!!
This week Mike took some of the boys out to pull our new sled!! It was a great work out...but guess what...we are just easing you guys into it...There are plenty more "painful" work outs coming. If you want to bring your fitness to another level, make sure to bring some running shoes to class as you never know when Mike will decide to punish somebody!! Acouple of guys had a hard time standing after class monday night!! LOL
Look forward to training with everyone tonight!!!
