If you are like me, I have a passion for martial arts…All Martial Arts!! You can often find many people debating which martial art is the best. The truth is they are all good. It is a matter of personal preference. For all of you who are like me, there is a solution!!
Did anyone tell you that you must only take one style in this life? You don't have to. When you test yourself in real combat, you will realize what your strengths and weaknesses are and you will be glad that you learned more than one system. You will also discover where your strengths are so that you may specialize in that particular area and still know enough to defend yourself against other areas.
For example, not everyone will naturally have a heavy punch. Does that mean you can't be an effective fighter? In the realm of boxing, you may be at a disadvantage. However, in MMA, you may turn out to be an awesome knee and clinching specialist or a deadly grappler. Thus, even though you will not be able to beat a boxer by punching, you may still come out victorious by being superior in any other area where your opponent is weaker. On the other hand, if you are a powerful puncher, your cross training will also give you enough knowledge to defend yourself against an opponent with a strong grappling background.
MMA is the perfect avenue to cross train in these various martial arts and give you the knowledge to be a more well rounded fighter and martial artist.
KARATE
Karate literally translates to “empty hand”. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage. Karate practice is divided into three different elements. However these three elements should not be considered separate, as they constantly overlap and rely on each other:
· Kihon (drilling of stances, blocks, punches, strikes and kicks)
The repetitious training of these basics is probably the most important element of any training curriculum.
· Kata (pre-arranged forms simulating combat situations)
Students are given the opportunity to practice techniques in a structured format at a comfortable pace which allows them to develop maximum power.
· Kumite (sparring)
Student can attempt to develop their skills on a resistant opponent.
Our Karate program is proudly affiliated with the Ryu Syo Kai G Ju Ryu curriculum as taught by Senaha Sensei in Okinawa Japan.
BRASILIAN JUJITSU
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of securing a dominant position and using submissions or chockes to force an opponent to give up or submit.
The system developed from a modified version of pre-WWII Judo also including some techniques from Japanese Jujitsu. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. Sparring, (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training.
Sudbury MMA is proudly affiliated with Sudbury BJJ. Students from both academies can cross train together and benefit from eachother’s programs.
MUAY THAI
Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing is the Thai name for a form of hard martial art practiced in Thailand.
Muay Thai has a long history, and is the country's national sport. Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs", as the knees, shins, elbow and knees are all used extensively in this art. A master practitioner of Muay Thai thus has the ability to execute attacks using eight "points of contact," as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented Karate.
Sudbury MMA is proudly affiliated with the Laurentian Muay Thai club. This association allows students from both clubs to cross train together.
WRESTLING
Wrestling is the act of physical engagement between two competitors competing for a physical advantage. Our focus at Sudbury MMA is freestyle wrestling. Physical techniques which embody the style of wrestling are pinning, leverage and the clinch.
Wrestling can also be referred to by many names such as grappling and submission wrestling. Wrestling can be used in both a standing position, where it is known as stand-up grappling, and on the ground, where it is known as ground grappling. Wrestling is an essential part of both clinch fighting and ground fighting.
Sudbury MMA is proudly affliliated with members of the Sudbury Golden Eagles wrestling club.
